Squirrel Monkey(Common Squirrel Monkey) (Saimiri sciureus)

Interesting :

It is a small size monkey. Its size is as big as that of tamarins. Its body length measured from head to tail base is around 12 inches or 1 foot. Its tail is longer than body. Its tail length is around 16 inches. Skin around nose and mouth is circled and black in color. Its facial color is pink or beige looking like wearing mask. Its eyeballs are brown-black in color. Its coat is not too long and brown in color with gray color dispersed around, just like that of squirrels. On its head, there is black hair dispersed around. Its coat from underneath the chest to tail is light yellow in color. Its coat around arms and legs are distinctively orange-yellow in color. Its tail tip hair is black in color. Its tail shape is similar to that of squirrel. It has 5 fingers on its hand and foot, which looks like human fingers but longer.

Habitat :

It is found in South Africa.

Food :

It eats fruits, some kinds of flowers, young birds, lizards, bird eggs, frogs, and insects.

Behavior :

It stays in herd. There are 20 – 30 squirrels in one herd. It likes jumping. It uses all 4 legs for jumping in the same style as the jump of squirrels. Thus, it looks almost like squirrels when watching from long distance. It moves by jumping from branch to branch. It does not like to walk on ground. When sleeping, it sleeps on trees tops or crotches. It does not climb down to ground or hollow to sleep. It is peaceful, not fierce, and not aggressive. Then, there is not much fighting both within its herd and other herds. It can adjust itself to new surroundings quite well. Thus, there is not much problem on moving its habitats.

Reproductive :

In breeding season, male has brighter color than female. Breeding season is all the year.Gestation period is around 6 months. One litter contains only one young.

Size and weight :

When mature, its weight is not more than 1 kilogram.
